  • The control plan and process FMEA for a representative job, which reveal whether inspection frequency is tied to actual risk or applied uniformly out of habit.

What to Verify on the Shop Floor

Documents can be assembled for an audit. Floor conditions cannot. Visit in person, or review a virtual shop tour first, and look for four things.

In-process inspection at the press, not only at final. Stamping defects come from die wear, material lot variation, and process drift, and all three announce themselves gradually. Statistical process control catches burr height growth, dimensional creep, and thinning before the scrap bin does. Ask who reacts to a trending chart.

Traceability from coil to shipment. Name a shipped lot and you should get back the material heat number, press, die, operator, and inspection results without a research project. That depth also determines how narrow a containment can be, which directly affects your exposure.

Metrology capacity relative to volume. One coordinate measuring machine supporting thirty presses becomes a bottleneck that quietly pushes inspection toward sampling shortcuts. Ask about CMM count, calibration intervals, and backlog.

Tooling condition and maintenance discipline. In-house tooling matters because a supplier that builds and maintains its own dies controls the primary variable behind stamping quality. Ask for hit counts by die, the preventive maintenance schedule, and how the shop decides whether to die repair or replace a die.

Why Supplier QA Evaluation Got Harder in 2026

Three developments have converged to put pressure on qualification timelines.

First, reshoring volume.
